I'm new to this forum, but wanted to know what this forum thinks about the NABI and it's new amazing cure for smoking called NICVAX. Currrently it's in phase III, but has an incredible hype especially in pharmaceutical conventions.
"NicVax is the brand name for a nicotine vaccine being developed by Nabi Pharmaceuticals a United States based pharmaceutical company. Tobacco is responsible for nearly half a million deaths in the United States alone and up to 700 000 deaths in China the largest tobacco marker and market in the world. Researchers have long shown that 70 percent of people who smoke wish they could stop smoking. Millions of these people actually never get to stop. Quitting smoking is hard. It is thought nicotine dependence is more difficult to overcome than heroin addiction.
NicVax now in its late stage three trials is expected to receive efficacy approval from the FDA in late 2011. The drug is administered by injection over a six months period. Unlike other stop smoking products, the nicotine vaccine works by stimulating the body to produce specific anti-bodies that in turn attaches themselves to nicotine molecules. How the vaccine works is essentially reverse engineering. It makes nicotine molecules in the bloodstream too big to cross the blood-brain barrier." (buzzle.com)

"NABI Biopharma initiates second phase III study for NicVAX as an aid to smoking cessation and long-term abstinence Co announced that it has initiated the second of two pivotal Phase III clinical trials for NicVAX (Nicotine Conjugate Vaccine), the company's innovative and proprietary vaccine to treat nicotine addiction and prevent smoking relapse. The FDA has agreed with Nabi on the study design, protocol and end points through a Special Protocol Assessment (SPA). The SPA forms a basic foundation to support approval of a New Drug Application. The Company also received scientific advice from the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) that confirms and supports the trial protocol."
If all goes well, FDA approval should be set for late next year... this is the next breakthru drug for smoking.
