IntelGenx hopes to secure partner for generic anti-depressant in next two to three months - CEO

IntelGenx (CVE:IGX), the Quebec-based biotech company, hopes to secure a commercialization partner for its major depressive disorder branded generic CPI-300 in the next two to three months, said President and CEO Horst Zerbe. The company is searching for a partner after prevailing in Paragraph IV ANDA litigation brought by Biovail (TSE:BVF) . IntelGenx will also submit its response to the FDA’s complete response letter for CPI-300 today, he added. The company received the letter on 8 February 2010.

CPI-300 is a high-strength formulation of bupropion hydrochloride XL. Biovail presently markets the drug Wellbutrin for major depressive disorder with the same active ingredient. Biovail obtained the rights to Wellbutrin from GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE:GSK) in 2009. CPI-300 is a 450 mg dose of buproprion hydrochloride.

Zerbe noted that the FDA’s complete response letter was directed towards manufacturing concerns, as the manufacturer who was listed in the NDA went bankrupt. Zerbe declined to identify the former manufacturer, but noted that the present manufacturer is Pillar 5 Pharma in Arnprior, Ontario. The company has since redone its exhibit batches, he noted.

On 3 February 2011, it was announced that a federal court for the district of Delaware dismissed Biovail’s ANDA litigation against IntelGenx after the court had ruled in favor of IntelGenx in the claim construction, or Markman hearing, in January.

Zerbe noted that the ongoing litigation had hindered IntelGenx in its partnership discussions. However, with the end of the litigation, the company is presently engaged in active negotiations for a commercialization partner. Potential partners are mid-size CNS specialty pharma companies, he noted. IntelGenx is seeking a seven-digit milestone payment as well as double-digit royalties as part of an agreement, but is not seeking co-promotion rights as part of the deal, he added. The company is not working with an external advisor with respect to partnership, he said.

Zerbe noted that IntelGenx hopes to receive FDA approval for its branded generic , BP-300, in the next three to six months.

Additionally, IntelGenx hopes to commence a Phase II study for a product in development for multiple sclerosis-induced pain in the fourth quarter, Zerbe said. The drug is an improved formulation of THC (dronabinal). The study will be run at multiple centers, but the company has not decided if it needs a CRO yet, he added. The trial will enroll 60 patients, he said.
