22Sept09: Starpharma today granted US patent on drug protecting against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), valid thru 2024. Patent is the third US patent for VivaGel and adds to the already extensive patent coverage for the product in 26 countries covering all major markets. VitaGell is non invasive (to blood / internal body) but very effective as binds to infectious agents, neutralizing them. It is a safe, nano-body containing cream applied into vagina via small disposable tube, even hours before intercourse by the woman. (The man need not know.)
Given the importance of genital herpes and other STIs in the US, this market is clearly a major commercial opportunity for Viva Gel(R) products, but an even larger market is the public health programs of developing countries, especially their anti-AIDs efforts. - In many parts of world woman has no way to protect herself. - Why a division of NIH and world heath organizations paid for the development of VitaGel (yet have no ownership rights to it). VitaGell can greatly reduce public health system's costs in the third world and save lives.
VivaGel(R) is also being developed as a condom coating in collaboration with SSL International, the world's leading condom company. SSL markets the global brand Durex(R), and holds approximately 40% of the global branded condom market.
